    The director of mathematics is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of Ascend’s Common Core-aligned math program throughout the network in grades K-4. He or she oversees the curation and pacing of research-based curricula; collaborates closely with the managing director of mathematics and each school’s instructional leaders to ensure the highest-fidelity implementations of these curricula; develops and delivers professional development in these curricula to school directors, deans, and math teachers; and, in collaboration with other members of the math team as well as the data and analytics team, regularly analyzes academic data to adjust and focus instruction.

    Responsibilities

    The director of mathematics will:

    • Oversee the curation and pacing of commercial and “Ascend-developed” products that form the basis of the three-part math program in Ascend’s lower schools: math workshop, math routines and number stories (CGI)
    • Continuously research and study developments in elementary mathematics education and integrate best practices of excellent schools into Ascend’s curriculum
    • Recommend annual refinements to lower school math program based on network trends, feedback from school-based leadership, and research of best practices
    • Work closely with school directors and deans of instruction to ensure implementations of the highest fidelity of math curricula
    • Develop and deliver professional development to school directors, deans of instruction, and math teachers, and at the annual Leader Institute and Teacher Institute
    • Support school-based professional development delivered by deans of instruction
    • Participate in school walkthroughs and implementation visits with the managing director of mathematics and school-based leadership team members
    • In collaboration with other members of the math team and the data and analytics team, analyze network-level data on K-4 assessments to adjust and focus instruction, identify network trends, and establish achievement goals
    • Create network-level action plans to address K-4 math benchmarks and other achievement data
    • Work in tandem with the managing directors to support leaders in developing action plans that drive student achievement in mathematics
    • In collaboration with other members of the math team, communicate important curriculum and assessment information to relevant stakeholders
    • Build positive and efficient working relations with the Ascend central schools team and with the leadership teams of each school

    Staff and reporting relationships

    The director of mathematics shall report to the managing director of mathematics and collaborate closely with other members of the curriculum and instruction team; Ascend managing directors, school directors, and deans of instruction; the director of data and analytics; and other members of the schools team.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree strongly preferred
    • A sustained record of outstanding academic results in mathematics, both as a teacher and a leader
    • Extensive experience coaching teachers and leaders in math instruction and preparing and delivering outstanding professional development
    • A deep understanding of the Common Core and New York’s Common Core-aligned state assessments in grades K-4
    • A broad familiarity with math pedagogies and programs and effective practice
    • Expertise in the principles of math teaching and research findings
    • Superb organizational, project management, self-management skills, and problem-solving skills
    • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to support, train, and coach educators
    • Passion and commitment to teaching scholars in underserved areas and to closing the achievement gap
    • Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals
    • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
    • Growth mindset and ability to use feedback to improve practice
    • Insistence on academic excellence and rigor
    • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
